Dortmund’s captain was seriously injured against Bayern and will be out for the rest of the season, at the end of which his contract expires. Now his club is sending a sign of trust.
Borussia Dortmund continues to plan with Emre Can. Despite the captain’s serious injury, the Bundesliga club wants to extend the expiring contract.
Sports director Lars Ricken announced appropriate steps after the midfielder tore his cruciate ligament in the top game against Bayern Munich (2:3). Ricken told the Funke media group: “We have enormous appreciation for Emre. That’s another reason why we want to support him on his way to a comeback beyond June 30th and extend his expiring contract.”
First, however, Can has to undergo surgery. Ricken explained: “If Emre has survived the upcoming operation, we will sit down with him about it.” Due to his serious knee injury, the 32-year-old will be out for several months and beyond the end of his current contract.
Ricken emphasized the importance of the midfielder for the club. He said: “It is an extremely bitter diagnosis for Emre and the entire club. He was the undisputed captain of our team not only under Niko Kovač, but also under Nuri Şahin and Edin Terzić.”
Can has worn the captain’s armband at BVB since 2023. At that time, he took over the position under coach Terzić as the successor to Marco Reus.
