The fire service knows all about it, explains a spokesperson. “Tonight we again received many reports of people who complain about the smell of fire,” said a spokesperson for the fire brigade. “That has actually been the case since the fire broke out in De Peel. But last night it was also hit in Best.”

“The wind makes sure that such a cloud is good to smell.”

Because in Best a large area of forest went up in flames on Thursday night, and the fire in the De Peel nature reserve is still raging two days later. That you smell a burning smell in the morning can therefore be explained.

“In general, the wind dies down at night. With a strong wind, the stench is dissolved and the smell is less intense, but the calm wind ensures that such a cloud stays together and can be smelled well. Also further away from the fire.”

In Tilburg, for example, there are complaints about a forest fire in Best, while in Eindhoven there are still complaints about odor nuisance due to the fire in De Peel.

“We are aware of this and are continuously monitoring the situation. No concentrations of harmful substances have been found that indicate that we should intervene. We can only advise people who experience nuisance to keep windows and doors closed.”

“If there are Easter fires in Germany, there are also complaints about this in the Netherlands.”

The fact that you can still smell that odor so far is not ‘very special’, reports the fire brigade. “If many Easter fires are lit in Germany, there are also complaints about this in the Netherlands at our control rooms. That’s how fast it goes: smoke can travel over very long distances and cause nuisance.”

How far exactly? That is difficult to say, according to the fire service.

“But to give an indication: the first day that there was a fire in De Peel, we received many reports of the nuisance. Those reports went as far as Budel-Dorplein, the most southwestern municipality in Brabant. So yes, you can rest assured. say that it concerns the wide perimeter,” concludes the spokesman.
