Pronouncing it has been a sensitive topic for some time now, but there is still a lot to be said about the ‘n-word’. The Dutch language historian Ewoud Sanders (65) has written a book about its history. When did we renounce it, does it make sense to delete it from Van Dale as activists want, and is that excuse of those who still use it – ‘I never knew any other way and I don’t mean anything bad by it’ – really valid?
