LaLiga: Athletic Bilbao extends coach Ernesto Valverde

Fighting for the European Cup

Since his second return last summer, coach Ernesto Valverde has averaged 1.81 points at Athletic Bilbao – the best tally of his third spell with the Basques. The club and the 59-year-old have now extended the expiring contract until 2024. as announced by Athletic.

Valverde began his professional coaching career in 2003 in Bilbao, where he had previously worked as an assistant under Txetxu Rojo and Jupp Heynckes and oversaw the second team. He stayed for two years (1.44 PPS) and returned in 2013 for his second, then four-year tenure (1.64) before FC Barcelona signed him.

In LaLiga, Athletic is in seventh place fighting for a place in the Europa Cup, it would be the first time since the 2017/18 season, when the Europa League made it to the round of 16. In the Copa del Rey they have also reached the semi-finals for the fourth time in a row, where they face CA Osasuna.
