La Liga: Girona stumbles – Real Madrid stays ahead

The sensation of Spanish football has stumbled. After five league wins in a row, the small FC Girona couldn’t get more than a 1-1 (0-0) draw against Athletic Bilbao on Monday and missed the opportunity to push the giants Real Madrid off the top of the table again. Both teams are level on points after 14 matchdays (35).

Inaki Williams (67th) quickly countered the goal of Ukrainian Viktor Zygankov (55th) for the guests. Girona was still fourth-tier in 2007 and plays in the smallest stadium in the league – however, since 2017, 44.3 percent of the club has belonged to the City Football Group, which has numerous clubs in its portfolio, especially Champions League winners Manchester City. The club’s CEO is Pere Guardiola, the younger brother of City team manager Pep Guardiola.
