Kurt Cobain’s Smells Like Teen Spirit guitar on display in London

The left-handed 1969 Fender Mustang guitar played by Kurt Cobain in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video is set to be exhibited in London before being auctioned in New York. Prior to the auction, the guitar will be on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus from April 24th to May 3rd, 2022.

Cobain raved about Fender Mustang

Kurt Cobain spoke enthusiastically of the blue-finished electric guitar in an interview with “Guitar World” in 1991: “I’m left-handed, and it’s not easy to find a quality left-handed guitar at a reasonable price,” said Cobain. “But of all the guitars in the world, the Fender Mustang is my favorite.”

Those interested can snag them at Julien’s Auctions’ Music Icons sale May 20-22 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York. The coveted collector’s item should bring in between 600,000 and 800,000 US dollars. Accordingly, the organizer is enthusiastic: In a press release, the President and CEO of Julien’s Auctions, Darren Julien, stated that it was “one of our greatest privileges and a great honor” to be able to auction the guitar. The auction will also include an NFT by Cobain’s guitar tech, Earnie Bailey. In it, Bailey explains the importance of the guitar. The value should be between 6,000 and 8,000 US dollars.

A portion of the proceeds goes to the Mental Health Campaign

Part of the auction is for charity: in time for Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Julien’s announced that a portion of the proceeds will benefit the ‘Kicking the Stigma’ mental health campaign.

1959 Martin D-18E grossed $6 million

This is not the first time Julien’s Auctions has auctioned off a Kurt Cobain guitar. His 1959 Martin D-18E guitar changed hands in June 2020 for $6 million. The guitar was made famous by Nirvana’s MTV unplugged session in November 1993. Cobain carried it to shows until shortly before his suicide on April 5, 1994.
