Kremlin critic Navalny is in a prison camp in northern Russia, says spokeswoman | Abroad

“We found Alexei Navalny. He is now in IK-3 in the Charp settlement of the Autonomous District of Yamalia,” Yarmysh posted on X. Navalny has been held in very strict prisons for some time. His team previously said they were concerned about his health.

His lawyers last saw him on December 5, exactly twenty days ago. Navalny must also still appear in trials via video link. When he didn’t show up there either, his team sounded the alarm. He completely disappeared from the radar; his location and condition were unknown for almost three weeks.

Allies of the Kremlin critic suspected that his disappearance was linked to the announcement of Vladimir Putin’s candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

Navalny was Russia’s main opposition to Putin’s rule. In 2020, Navalny was poisoned by the Russian secret service FSB, research by research collective Bellingcat showed. Navalny survived the poisoning and returned to Russia after receiving treatment in Germany. He was arrested there and has since been imprisoned for founding an ‘extremist organization’.
