The city council supports the project. Ships of Sport Wouter Allijns: “We are very satisfied that a solution has been found quickly so that the many Kortrijk skaters can once again be on the ice in their own city. It is impressive what these driven parents have set up in a short time.”

Because the site already has an event permit, the plans can improve faster. Ships of Spatial Planning Hannelore Vanhoenacker emphasizes: “One can immediately start a temporary permit for four months. This is followed by an urban development and environmental permit that the city will assess.”

However, the construction and design entail high costs. That is why VZW IJsbaan Kortrijk is launching the ‘Adopt a square meter of ice’ campaign, where everyone can support a virtual square meter. In exchange, sponsors receive skating rates and a mention on the Wall of Fame.

The opening of the new ice rink is planned for the autumn of 2025, with the autumn holiday as a target date.
