Koosje Zomer paints winning portrait of Daan Schuurmans: ‘The children have been fishing for the outcome’

For the second week in a row, the NPO program Stars on the Canvas has a winner from Drenthe. In last Saturday’s broadcast, around 700,000 TV viewers saw that actor Daan Schuurmans thought that Koosje Zomer from Hollandscheveld had portrayed him best. Last week, Olcay Gulsen chose the work of Robert van Beek from Emmen.

Zomer, originally from Elim, trained as a visual artist at the Classical Academy in Groningen between 2011 and 2017. She specializes in painting, but in recent years she has also made more and more art with steel.

When she saw an appeal from the TV program on Facebook at the beginning of this year, Zomer initially hesitated about signing up. “My husband then said that I should just join in. Then you will see how things go, he said,” Zomer reflects.

The program was quite a challenge for Zomer. “It was not only exciting, but also hard work,” she says. The recording of the NPO program took place in three weeks. “From the end of April to the beginning of May. So you had to be able to paint a canvas in three weeks. I usually manage that, but I always spend a lot of time preparing and reading up on a subject.”
