In the years that followed, Maes acquired a lot of course knowledge and eventually he took over from the late Roger Ticket as course manager of the Duinencross. Cyclo-cross has undergone a gigantic metamorphosis since then, think of the double material stations. Live television also provided extra influence: cameras, sponsor interests and of course the much-needed spectacle value. Walter’s expertise and creativity ensured that the Duinencross made the step into the 21st century smoothly. And all this in close consultation with the international cycling union (UCI).
Alderman for Sport Lore Dezutter: “2012 was a pivotal moment in Walter’s career as course manager with the organization of the world championship. 61,000 racing enthusiasts saw Niels Albert achieve eternal glory on Sunday, January 29, 2012. After the match, Walter even received congratulations from King Albert II. A highlight. And once again we were a dune and an honorary citizen richer.”
