Koen Casteels announces farewell

Goalkeeper Koen Casteels will leave Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg after this season, after a total of nine years.

Lower Saxony and the Belgian national goalkeeper agreed not to extend the 31-year-old’s contract at the end of June 2024, as the club announced. Casteels switched from league rival TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to Wolfsburg in 2015.

“The time has come for me to say goodbye after nine years at VfL Wolfsburg and to take on a new challenge again,” Casteels said.

“I’ve thought about this step carefully and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.” The keeper played his 216th Bundesliga game for Wolfsburg in the 3-1 draw at Hoffenheim on Saturday.
