KLM cancels 50 flights a day at Schiphol during busy Whitsun weekend

Airline KLM will cancel fifty flights a day at Schiphol next weekend, because large crowds are expected there again. The company has that choice Friday in their own words made to ‘contribute to a manageable situation’ at the airport. Passengers on the canceled flights have been rebooked.

KLM has freed up seats on some flights, so that travelers who do not make their flight due to the crowds can still fly later in the day. The carrier has determined ‘on a trial basis’ that hold baggage is only taken on board after the passengers have been boarding. This is to prevent flights from being delayed because the suitcases of passengers who miss their flight are taken off board again.

At the end of April, the airline also canceled just over a hundred flights on a weekend, when many travelers were on their way for spring break. Schiphol Airport has been struggling for more than a month with great crowds due to staff shortages and an increasing number of travelers since the relaxation of the corona measures. On Thursday, Schiphol announced that passengers will only be able to access the departure halls four hours before departure from Friday, in order to better spread the queues.
