“There are people who think the archive should remain closed and there are people who don’t think so. The question of what is one or the other is not that important,” says Finke. “That is simply regulated by law. It may be public, so it may be wiser to pick up the veil from the past. Take control of what has been wrong in your family. You are not responsible for that. It is your parents, often grandparents or great -grandparents who have made that choice.”
In the case of Finke it was not his grandparents, but the ‘side lines’. “Neven van mijn grootvader. Maar ik heb in mijn familie wel 21 NSB’ers zitten. En dat zijn behoorlijke aantallen. Het zijn ook geen mensen die alleen maar eventjes lid waren en de NSB-krant lazen en een radiootje mochten houden.
