Kippenboer is recovering seven months after the devastating fire in Graswijk

Farmer Jarno Jansen from Graswijk lost thirty thousand chickens in a fire in October. After a difficult period, the sun is shining again for the poultry farmer, who is already busy planning a new chicken house.

“Well, here it was. Now it’s just an empty concrete slab, that’s it.” Jansen spreads his arms and slaps them against his hips. He peers across the empty plain where his shed was a year ago. The damage: at least one million euros.

While the fire broke out, Jansen was not present, but working on his wife’s dairy farm. A friend who was in Graswijk saw smoke coming from the roof and alerted both the fire brigade and the chicken farmer. “It was completely wrong and he asked me to come as soon as possible. So that’s what we did.”

Jansen hurried to Graswijk and upon arrival his site was already full of emergency services. Large flames shot meters high from the roof of the stable. It turned out that it could no longer be saved, but the fire brigade managed to prevent the fire from spreading to another chicken house and the egg room.

Because of this action by the fire service, Jansen can continue his business until now. A miracle, the chicken farmer calls it himself. The very expensive sorting machine and associated robot are also located in the egg room. Despite considerable smoke and water damage, the equipment still works.
