King Mohammed thanks countries for help after earthquake | Abroad

Moroccan King Mohammed has thanked several heads of state and government for their help after the earthquake that struck part of the south of his country last week. The king sent messages of thanks to Spanish King Felipe, British King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, among others, state news agency MAP reports.

The monarch expressed his gratitude to Felipe “for the support of his country” and praised the efforts of the Spanish rescue teams and how they worked together with aid teams from his own country. In the message to King Charles and Prime Minister Sunak, the Moroccan king underlines that he is “proud of the ties between Morocco and the United Kingdom” and how rescue teams have provided assistance to those affected by the quake.

Messages also went out to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the President of the United Arab Emirates. These countries also promised emergency aid soon after the earthquake in the form of a financial contribution and the sending of rescue teams.

There was a lot of criticism of the Moroccan King Mohammed because he remained silent for a long time after the earthquake. According to critical voices, it shows how fickle he is. While his people beg and moan, he spends his days living abroad in luxury.

Aid was offered from more countries, but Morocco did not allow emergency aid from all countries. France, among others, was not allowed to help and there was speculation in French media that this could have to do with the deteriorated relationship between the two countries.

According to the latest figures, almost 3,000 people died as a result of the severe earthquake.
