Due to a pile-up at Spier, a kilometer-long traffic jam formed on the A28 in the direction of Groningen to Hoogeveen at the beginning of the afternoon. Due to the accident, Rijkswaterstaat has completely closed that lane and traffic from Groningen is advised to drive via Heerenveen on the A7 and A32.
The exact cause of the pileup has yet to be determined. To prevent road users from joining at the back of the traffic jam, the police divert traffic from the highway at the Wijster exit. The traffic jam expanded quickly, because there is a narrowing of the road at the site as a result of road works. Due to the narrowing of the road, emergency services had difficulty reaching the victims.
Around 1.30 pm there was a traffic jam of about seven kilometers. The condition of the victims is unknown.
