Khedira, Mertesacker and Ruhnert are probably candidates for DFB posts alongside Völler

Manager for academy & young talent

In the search for a second director alongside Rudi Völler, the German Football Association (DFB) has apparently decided on three candidates. According to a report by thePicture“The former world champions Sami Khedira and Per Mertesacker as well as the current sports director Oliver Ruhnert from Union Berlin are the favourites.

Völler, who has been the director of the men’s national team since February 1, emphasized last week at the hearing in the sports committee on the failure of the World Cup that a manager for the areas of responsibility for the academy and youth was still being sought. However, the 1990 world champion did not want to comment on specific names. Völler had previously told the TV station “Bild”: “There are some candidates with whom we will definitely meet in the next few weeks.” The DFB Presidium will make a decision.

Khedira is currently gaining experience on an administrative level as a consultant at his hometown club VfB Stuttgart. Mertesacker has a lot of experience in the youth field having managed the Arsenal FC academy. Ruhnert is considered a main reason for Union’s rise from a second division team to a European Cup starter. When asked whether a DFB post would appeal to him, Ruhnert recently answered in an interview with the “world on Sunday(to the news): Of course I can imagine that. It would even be fun for me to tackle certain things, because the DFB has no decision-makers.” According to the report, Khedira is the favorite of the trio.
