Kevin-Prince Boateng knows the Hertha well and knows the relegation battle with the club. The current situation of his ex-club makes him sad.
Kevin-Prince Boateng took his first steps at Hertha BSC. He came to the professionals through the youth academy of the Berliners before leaving the club for an impressive career. In the end, the circle closed when the midfielder came back to today’s second division team in July 2021 and then ended his career there in 2023. In 2022, the 37-year-old acted as a player coach under Felix Magath and the duo mastered the relegation in the Bundesliga with the team. Now the Hertha is in the crisis again – but a league below.
That hurts the former star of the club: “It’s just difficult, it is also difficult to find positive things. You have to be honest.” The capital club is currently in 14th place in the league and has not been able to win for six games. The team of coach Stefan Leitl received a 0: 4 defeat against Elversberg.
The game against Elversberg disappointed Boateng: “You have the change, you brought the new coach and then you see such a game, that’s just sad.” He added on the edge of the Baller League: “It is difficult to find words. I saw 20 minutes in the first half and then you can do it because you know how the game will go out.”
With only four points ahead of the relegation rank, Hertha urgently has to adjust to the relegation battle. “At some point you have to change the switch and if you don’t do it now, you are in the middle of the relegation battle, then it works very quickly,” warned Boateng. The competition in the table cellar is used to such situations – it is different for Hertha. Therefore, the team must now understand: “Playing nicely. Hertha must now know that it is only possible to fight.”
Boateng recalled the successful relegation battle in 2022 under coach Felix Magath when he himself took on a leadership role. “I already have my tricks that I knew how to concern the team as you are concerned,” he said. At that time, the cohesion in particular secured the relegation. “Especially in phases in which we have not relegated, that was the cohesion of the players who did it.”
