For Kees van Wonderen, the time at Schalke ended earlier than expected. Now he could still collect a lot of money for this.

The Schalke misunderstanding with Kees van Wonderen ended with a bang in the middle of the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga. The 56 -year -old Dutchman, who had only taken over the “royal blue” in October, was released with immediate effect last weekend – and that was not all.

In addition to the sporting situation, the relationship between van Wonderen and the club bosses was also massively tense. He had sharply criticized the club tour and missed the backing. On April 23, the Schalke reported that they would part with him after this season. The club bosses came to the conclusion that van Wonderen could not meet the requirements of a head coach in Schalke in the long term.

And it is precisely this decision that could now cost the second division team a decent sum. Because as the “Sport Bild” reports, a so-called “fire clause” in van Wonderen’s contract applies. The Dutch will receive a little more than half of the outstanding salary. His contract runs until 2026, so the total is around 200,000 euros in severance payments with an annual salary of 350,000 euros.

Originally, the club even considered letting Van Wonderen’s contract continue. Another club may have committed the trainer – and Schalke could have saved one or two monthly salaries.

In the two outstanding games of the season, U23 coach Jakob Fimpel will look after the professionals of FC Schalke 04. On Saturday we will go to Düsseldorf before the last matchday of the Elversberg season in the Veltins Arena (both games in the T-Online live ticker).
