After European Championship gold and World Cup silver, Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin dream of Olympic gold. The German medal hopes in figure skating rest exclusively on the top pair.
Katarina Witt has made her decision: For Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin there is hardly any way around precious metal at the upcoming Winter Olympics. The two-time Olympic champion sees the German couple at the top of the world.
“They are among the favorites. I think the two are a great couple. Above all, they both have a big heart as a person and they also have a big fighting heart. A medal is a must,” said Witt at an NFL event and the “Bild” newspaper.
Hase and Volodin travel to Italy with strong results. After the European title and silver at the World Cup, they are hoping for the next big success. According to Witt, the fact that they didn’t win gold at the World Championships in Boston could actually help them. “It was probably good for them because then they don’t have the burden of defending a title. Even if it’s the Olympics and not the World Cup,” said the 59-year-old.
Witt himself won Olympic gold in Sarajevo in 1984 and in Calgary in 1988. At the games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo there will be no German starters in the individual competitions for the first time since 2002.
