He has bought five kilos of mandarins on the market, especially for all children who visit him that afternoon. “I like it so much that they come and wave. They can all take a few with them,” says Aad Havenaar.

He has been living in Hilversum since 1978 and is a happy man, he says. But sometimes he would like a little more attention. “People who stop by, say hello or have a short chat: that sometimes really makes my day. That makes me very happy.”

Against loneliness

To stimulate that, children from primary school De Avonturijn have now placed a ‘waving one’ in front of his house. It is a sticker with one hand on it and the text ‘wave to give a smile’, designed by one of the children.

“We think it is important that people are not lonely,” say the students Luuk (12) and Jill (12). Together with the Present Foundation, they ensured that the stones were coming.
