In addition to replacing the panels, presenters Niels van der Laan and Jeroen Woe announced at the end of their broadcast on Saturday that they have built an additional “exhibition” around the panels.
That exhibition takes the form of a walking route along several other panels placed by the TV program, on which, according to Van der Laan and Woe, “all discriminatory actions of the Trump administration” are explained.
American ambassador visits Margraten
Earlier this month, NRC revealed that the cemetery manager, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), had removed two information boards about the role of black soldiers from the permanent exhibition of the visitor center in Margraten.
The municipality of Eijsden-Margraten and the province of Limburg then asked the ABMC to replace the information boards, but the Americans refused. The administrator informed the NOS that the stories about the struggle for equality, which African-American soldiers waged simultaneously in their own country and within the army, no longer fit within “the memorial mission”.
The makers of Even tot hier then decided to place their panels just outside the cemetery territory “with the honest story about the black heroes and about Trump,” according to Woe. They gave their exhibition the satirical name ‘MAGA hating’ at Margraten. The opening was performed on air by “descendants” of the black soldiers.
