After the end of the Potsdam exhibition about the life’s work of designer Wolfgang Joop (81), his team is checking whether the show can still be shown in another city. There have so far been four offers from Germany and German-speaking countries, said Joop’s life partner Edwin Lemberg, who planned the exhibition, to the German Press Agency. “We’ll see to it that things continue.”
Lemberg did not want to say which cities were interested in showing the Joop exhibition. He revealed that Berlin was not among them.
Permanent Joop exhibition in Potsdam conceivable?
Lemberg also addressed an idea expressed by guests as to whether Joop’s hometown of Potsdam could present a permanent exhibition of his work. “I would be happy,” said Lemberg. “That’s certainly not a mistake. The people of Potsdam would like that.”
Around 25,000 visitors saw the retrospective lasting several weeks
The first comprehensive exhibition about Joop’s life’s work was shown in the Kunstraum Potsdam – a kind of gallery. According to the city, more than 25,000 visitors came in just under six weeks.
The retrospective, which ended on November 18th, showed Joop’s fashion, many sketches and illustrations, but also his works as a painter and sculptor, with free admission. The designer, who has lived in Potsdam with Lemberg for years, is considered a creative all-rounder.
“Exhibition touches”
Many visitors felt very touched by the exhibition, which does not contain many explanations about Joop’s works, said Lemberg. “We couldn’t be happier,” was the motto halfway through the show.
Hamburg and New York were important stations in Joop’s life. But he describes Potsdam, where he was born on a farm near Sanssouci Park, as his place of longing.
