Jonas Vingegaard deals a final blow to Tadej Pogacar in the queen stage of the Tour de France | Tour de France

Stage win Felix GallJonas Vingegaard dealt the final blow to Tadej Pogacar in the Tour de France. The Slovenian soon had to get off on the Col de la Loze, after which Vingegaard accelerated and took several minutes on his big rival. The queen stage was won by Felix Gall.

Could the Tour still be exciting after Jonas Vingegaard’s incredible time trial on Tuesday? The hope was there, but the Tour was already decided before the steepest part on the final climb Col de la Loze. The Slovenian had to get off when the group still consisted of about ten men, an unusual picture in this Tour that seemed to turn into a game of seconds for a long time. But in just 48 hours time, there was spreading in minutes.

For Pogacar, the stage already started with a setback. After just over fifteen kilometers, the UAE leader crashed uphill. With blood on his knee he continued on his way, but knowing that he could not start the queen stage with two first category climbs, a third category climb and as a bouncer a hors category climb, was already a sign on the wall .

With thirteen kilometers to go, Pogacar had to let go. Jumbo-Visma did not increase the pace at that time and had even sent two men in a large leading group with Tiesj Benoot and Wilco Kelderman. Benoot waited for Vingegaard, did a great head turn and personally made sure that Adam Yates was the last GC rider to get off. Only Vingegaard continued. For Pogacar, the race had already been run: he lost minutes.

Vingegaard hoped to take the win for the second day in a row, but partly due to delays in the last eight kilometers due to a motorcycle and jury car standing still in a corner, Vingegaard was no longer able to close the gap to the front runners. In the front, Felix Gall had driven away from a large group and Simon Yates was chasing the Austrian.

With a lead of twenty counts on Yates, Gall was the first on top of Col de la Loze, the roof of the Tour and therefore good for 40 mountain points. But more importantly, his lead over Yates was 20 seconds. In the descent he did not relinquish that lead and also in the steep final kilometer his best victory of his career was not in danger.

Vingegaard finished fourth, almost two minutes behind stage winner Gall, behind Yates and Pello Bilbao. Then it was a matter of waiting for the loser of the day, Pogacar. In the final kilometres, the Team UAE Emirates rider struggled to keep up with the pace of teammates and eventually came in almost six minutes behind Vingegaard. With that, his gap in the standings to the Dane is already more than seven minutes and the Tour is over.

5:31 pm

Pogacar in almost eight minutes

So he loses almost six minutes to Jonas Vingegaard.

5:29 pm

Pogacar almost inside

He can no longer follow the wheel of teammates. It’s completely empty.

5:25 pm

Vingegaard is having a hard time

And Bilbao still has to let go in the last meters, but he takes a lot of profit on Pogacar and deals the final blow to the Slovenian. Vingegaard ends up in fourth place at almost two minutes.

5:23 pm

Felix Gall wins the queen stage!

The Austrian does not relinquish his lead and wins the seventeenth stage in the Tour de France. Great performance from Gall, who manages to stay ahead of Yates.

17:19

Another 2.5 kilometers

Gall on a cutscene. Yates follows up 16 counts. Vingegaard at 1.28 minutes.

5:17 pm

Dangerous descent

Hopefully everyone will stay upright in the descent of the Col de la Loze. Yates follows 17 seconds behind the Austrian. The last kilometer is still dirty uphill.

5:17 pm

Pogacar well behind

He is already 4 minutes behind Vingegaard.

5:16 pm

Gall up first

Yates follows at 20 seconds, Vingegaard catches up with Bilbao and Gaudu and follows at 1.20 minutes.

5:14 pm

Another 7 kilometers

Gall has 23 seconds on Simon Yates. Vingegaard is 1.38 minutes behind. Bad luck for the Dane: the top is in sight. Gall will do his job in the King of the Mountains classification and, thanks to the double points on Col de la Loze, he is 6 points behind Ciccone.

17:11

Another 8 kilometers

Kelderman lets Vingegaard go. The Dane storms up alone. Due to the delay, stage victory is probably no longer possible. Up front, Gall has 18 counts on Yates.

5:09 PM

Chaos! Vingegaard is hindered

Engines and the jury car are stopped in a corner. Vingegaard is hindered and has to go around the car. Unbelievable. In a corner they can’t get away. We get to see even less than Wout Poels’ victory, but again engines play a dubious role in a Tour stage.

5:06 PM

Yates leaves Majka behind

And goes hunting for Gall alone. Another 2.4 kilometers of climbing. The road runs with 20 percent up.

5:04 PM

Another 9 kilometers

Vingegaard joins Kelderman. Can the Dutchman still mean something to the Dane?

5:02 PM

Another 10 kilometers

Simon Yates and Majka continue together, chasing Gall. The gap: 23 seconds. Vingegaard is coming: 2.19 minutes. Pogacar follows at 4.17 minutes.

5:00 PM

Vingegaard alone

Benoot has done his job (and how!) and now leaves it to Vingegaard. The Dane flies up. He is 2.37 minutes behind Gall. Pogacar follows at 1.30 minutes from Vingegaard.

4:59 pm

Another 11 kilometers

Meanwhile up front: Gall has only 15 seconds left on Harper, Yates and Majka.

Yates also has to get off at Vingegaard!

16:58

Striking: Kiss it off too

Only Vingegaard and Yates can follow Benoot’s pace.

16:57

Another 11 kilometers

Kelderman also drops back and lets Bilbao and Gaudu go. They are 40 seconds from Gall.

4:56 pm

Benoot waits for Vingegaard

The Belgian gets going for a while to help Vingegaard. Meanwhile, Pogacar drives up 40 seconds!
