The Ministry of Justice and Security has decided to re-use the Jeugdzorgplus location in Harreveld (municipality of Oost Gelre) as a judicial youth institution (JJI). This makes it expected to be available for the placement and guidance of young people who fall under juvenile criminal law over 18 to 24 months phased. This depends, among other things, on the progress of the renovation and recruitment of staff.
The Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) will work in the coming period to make the location suitable for use as a JJI. Minister of Justice and Security, David van Weel: “With the new location, around 70 places are becoming available. This allows the shortage of JJI places to be largely resolved. Young adults who are now forced to be in a regular prison will soon be able to go to a JJI again. We will also get cells for other convicts again.”
The location in Harreveld has previously been used as JJI and therefore lends itself well to this destination, partly because there are educational facilities on the site. The decision also gives the possibility to keep staff in the transition from closed youth assistance to JJI.
In addition to the deployment as a JJI, it is also whether part of the location can be intended as a national top clinical treatment facility for youth assistance in a criminal framework. The outcome of that exploration will be announced shortly.
