In Hamburg and City, Vincent Kompany and Jérôme Boateng once played together in defense. Now their paths in Munich could cross again.
Former international Jérôme Boateng wants to become a trainer – and could soon return to Säbener Strasse. Because of all, his former teammate and today’s Bayern coach Vincent Kompany replied to a question that he would want to invite the ex-Munich central defender to train the German record champion.
“Share his experience as a top defender for a few weeks? Of course. Of course. I would always invite you to hundred percent. That is very valuable,” said Kompany. The 39-year-old and Boateng know each other well, played together at Hamburger SV and later at Manchester City. “We have a common past and are good friends,” said the company. “I am extremely proud of him and happy about what he has achieved.”
Only shortly afterwards Boateng appeared in the Allianz Arena. In the 4-0 home success of the Munich against Werder Bremen, the 2014 world champion was a viewer and reacted to Kompany’s invitation: “I heard it, I have to call him now,” he said to “ran.de”.
Boateng was one of the world’s best defender for years. In 2014 he became world champion with Germany. He was active in Bavaria from 2011 to 2021 and, among other things, won the Champions League and nine championship titles twice. He has been without a club since last August – a few days ago, the Berlin -born declared his career end at the age of 37.
After the acquisition of the trainer B license at the end of 2024, he is now striving for the A license and then the football teacher. Kompany trusts his former teammate a successful coaching career. “Of course he can be a top coach if he wants that,” said Kompany. “It’s like playing football, you have to work hard. You can always be the best, but it takes time.”
