In the Spanish cup final, Antonio Rüdiger freaked out completely before the end. A former international defended the real defender.

After his freak out at the Spanish Cup final, Antonio Rüdiger is massively criticized. While many former internationals clearly position themselves against the defender, Jens Lehmann finds conciliatory words.

The former goalkeeper said on the TV station world that Rüdiger had “become such a great player because he is as he is”. It should not be taken away from him, otherwise his performance may suffer.

Rüdiger had insulted the referee in the final against Barça (2: 3) shortly before the extension ended and thrown at an object. At that time he was already replaced. The defender saw the red card and apologized publicly the day after.

Lehmann admitted that Rüdiger “did not show any flawless behavior”. “But I think something like that is to be apologized,” said the ex-goalkeeper. “These are emotions that occasionally go through with someone.” From his own experience, he could confirm that he was often emotional himself.

Lothar Matthäus and Didi Hamann had said less. Both demanded consequences for the DFB defender. Rudi Völler, sports director of the national team, had also found clear words: “This is not possible. Especially not as a German international.” Rüdiger had to change this, but also knew that himself. His public reaction showed this.
