In an interview with the American channel CBS, Vance emphasized that Israel remains an important ally of the United States, but he also acknowledged that the interests of the two countries do not always coincide.

“Sometimes our interests are completely aligned and sometimes they are not,” Vance said. “What I see in the Prime Minister is that he vigorously defends the interests of his country. Sometimes we are on the same page, sometimes not.”

Relationship with Trump under strain

The relationship between President Donald Trump and Netanyahu is said to have deteriorated significantly in recent weeks. According to news site Axios, Trump even called the Israeli prime minister “completely crazy” during a recent phone call.

Tensions increased after Netanyahu gave the green light to strikes on Iran in retaliation for Iranian missile strikes. According to American media, he thus went against Trump’s preference.

“American interests first”

Vance made it clear that in the event of a conflict of interest, the US will prioritize its own national interests. “Israel has been an excellent partner in many ways, but we must also focus on what is best for America. When our interests diverge, we must choose the American people. We always do that.”

He (Netanyahu, ed.) certainly made some mistakes

When asked whether Netanyahu made mistakes in the Iran dossier, Vance replied in the affirmative. “He definitely made some mistakes.” The vice president did not want to clarify which mistakes exactly he meant. According to him, it is better to have such conversations behind closed doors.
