Images of the carnage are shared by ‘Tochigi TV’ and ‘TBS News’. The incident took place this month in the parking lot of the Oya Stone Museum in Utsunomiya. The museum reported the matter to the police because of tire tracks on the asphalt. Police reviewed CCTV footage and discovered that a Nissan Skyline, a popular racing car among drift fans, had been rented in Tokyo.
Not long after the discovery, a 32-year-old Dutchman was arrested. The man was said to have been in Japan for a short stay and had rented a car “for tourist purposes”. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that it is aware of the detention of a Dutch man in Japan. It is not known whether he is still in custody at this time.
“Don’t be so arrogant”
According to the Japanese news channel ‘TBS News’, the Dutchman refused to comment and did not want to respond to the accusations. This goes down the wrong way with many Japanese. There are angry reactions from locals among the news videos. “Rent a car for a holiday and then do this? How antisocial can you be?”, someone writes. “It’s outrageous that you came to Japan thinking you could drift in a rental car,” wrote another Japanese. Perhaps you watched the Fast and Furious film ‘Tokyo Drift’ one too many times?
Especially the fact that the Dutchman remains silent and does not apologize is causing anger in Japan. “This says everything about his attitude. He clearly looks down on us,” someone responds. Another added: “Don’t be so arrogant!”
