Tagawa was known to a wider audience as villain Shang Tsung in adaptations of the video game series Mortal Kombat. The actor first played the character in the 1995 live-action film of the same name.

The actor, who was often cast as a villain, made his breakthrough with a smaller role The last emperor from 1987.
He later appeared in films like Pearl Harbor, Planet of the apes, Memoirs of a Geisha and Tekken. Tagawa’s last starring role in a major production was in the series The Man in the High Castle.
