Jan Thomas Jenssen is in 13th place in the overall World Cup and is one of the best cross-country skiers in the world. But the Norwegian almost wasn’t able to compete in another race.

Norwegian cross-country skier Jan Thomas Jenssen narrowly escaped tragedy during training. Jenssen set off despite a storm near the city of Trondheim – a mistake. “As I was coming towards Skjellbreia in Bymarka, a huge spruce tree broke off right next to me. It just crashed down. I was really scared,” Jenssen told the newspaper Addressavisen.

Tens of thousands of households are without power due to the severe storm hitting central Norway. Police have urged the public to stay at home and secure loose items.

Jenssen admitted that it wasn’t the wisest decision to go training in these conditions. “It was probably a bit stupid of me to go out this afternoon,” he admitted. Several times he had to take off his skis to overcome obstacles along the way.

“I sent a picture to my family and they clearly told me to go home. That really wasn’t wise of me.” Despite the dangerous situation, the athlete remained uninjured and was able to return home safely.
