Almost international before returning to the Bundesliga

The winter transfer phase is underway and the German clubs are in the middle of it. Rumors and fixed changes from the world of football can be found here.
With the beginning of 2025, the transfer window opened in the Bundesliga and other European leagues. In Germany the transfer period ends on February 3rd. After that, players can still move abroad, provided the leagues there have a later transfer deadline.
Which clubs are most in need of reinforcements, what is FC Bayern doing and what is the situation at the top European clubs? These and many other questions will be answered this transfer winter. At t-online you can find an overview of the most important guesses and changes from Germany and the world.
Jan-Niklas Beste is apparently about to return to the Bundesliga. As the Portuguese sports newspaper “Record” reports, Beste’s move from Benfica Lisbon to SC Freiburg is almost perfect. Accordingly, the sports club will transfer around ten million euros to the Portuguese record champions. Only details remain to be clarified, it said.
The left winger only moved from 1. FC Heidenheim to Benfica last summer for a similarly high sum. However, the 26-year-old has not yet progressed beyond the role of a supplementary player. Beste was nominated for the national team in spring 2024, but was not used due to an injury.
Steffen Baumgart scowled beneath his black cap. “We should learn the lessons from this,” said Union Berlin’s new coach after the next serious setback. His team left a dull impression in the 0:3 (0:1) loss to St. Pauli – another squad refresh during this change period seems urgently needed.
Those responsible around managing director Horst Heldt are correspondingly active. Winger Filip Kostić is a name circulating in Köpenick that is very well known in the Bundesliga. The 32-year-old former player from VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV and Eintracht Frankfurt could bring a necessary dose of creativity to the team if signed. He is currently on loan from Juventus Turin to Fenerbahçe Istanbul.
Without reinforcements and in Sunday’s constitution, Union could still be in trouble. “We all know that the situation is dangerous,” said Baumgart, who has not yet been able to build up momentum with one win from four games. He remained tight-lipped about transfer activities. “I would be happy if you got the feeling that we are working on it,” said the 53-year-old, who was already missing the basics in Sunday’s game that he will need to survive in the fight against relegation.
Anthony Modeste apparently has a new club. As the TV channel Sky reports, the striker will sign with Spanish third division club CF Intercity. Modeste will receive a contract until the end of the season and will help the club stay in the league.
The 36-year-old has been without a club since the summer of 2024 after his contract in Egypt (Al Ahly) expired. In the meantime, the former goalscorer for 1. FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund has been linked to Schalke 04.
Antony, who moved from Ajax Amsterdam to Manchester United in the summer of 2022 for a transfer fee of 95 million euros, will leave the “Red Devils” at least temporarily. The 24-year-old Brazilian is moving to Spanish first division club Real Betis on loan until the end of the season. A purchase option was not agreed upon. Both clubs confirmed the agreement on Saturday evening.
