James Hetfield reveals self-doubt on stage – afraid he’s too old for rock

James Hetfield isn’t getting any younger either. With that come worries related to his performance on stage. The Metallica singer was extremely emotional during a performance in Brazil when he commented on his age and the associated uncertainties before performances.

Hetfield opens up to the public

On May 12th, Metallica performed at the Estádio do Mineirão in Belo Horizonte. The 58-year-old lost his voice briefly, after which he received a group hug from his bandmates. Hetfield told the audience that he wasn’t feeling very well before the show:

“I have to tell you guys I wasn’t feeling very good before I came out here. I felt a little bit insecure, like I was an old guy, like I couldn’t play anymore – all that nonsense I’m telling myself in my head,” he explains.

Hammett, Trujillo and Ulrich then came together and hugged Hetfield. Afterwards, the singer added, “And when I see you guys out there, I’m not alone. I am not alone and neither are you.”
