Once again there were violent falls around the Alpine Ski World Cup. This time a German driver was also hit.
The second training session for the prestigious Hahnenkamm downhill run in Kitzbühel was marred by two violent falls. German ski racer Jacob Schramm was hit particularly hard. The 26-year-old, who made his World Cup debut on the legendary Streif last year, fell badly and was taken to hospital by helicopter.
According to the German Ski Association, he suffered a concussion and a complex knee injury. However, Schramm will undergo further examinations.
The Austrian Felix Hacker was also affected. The 25-year-old, currently leader in the overall European Cup standings, fell in a right-hand bend. Hacker slipped with his inner ski and also had to be transported away in a helicopter. He is also suspected of having a knee injury.
The Streif has always been considered one of the most demanding and dangerous downhill routes in the ski circuit. There are frequent crashes on the route, some of them serious.
Last winter, Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin triumphed with a rare double victory. But the 29-year-old has been out since the end of December: after a serious fall in Bormio, in which he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, Sarrazin had to undergo surgery. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation in France.
In Kitzbühel, despite Schramm and Hacker’s recent crashes, an eventful weekend is ahead. The Super-G on Friday opens the races, followed by the prestigious Downhill on Saturday. On Sunday the weekend ends with a slalom on the Ganslernhang.
