We last reported on Jack White:
Most recently published Jack White his celebrated album “No Name” (2024), but also campaigned against US President Donald Trump in the USA. The United States is more polarized in Trump’s second term than it has been in a long time. Jack White commented on this. In an interview with the British “Guardian” he spoke about the difference between political speech and political art.
“When Dylan said the answer was in the wind, he didn’t tell us all what the answer was,” the songwriter explained meaningfully. He used this example to explain that artists can (and perhaps even should!) separate what they think politically and what they sing.
While he has clear political views in his private life, he prefers metaphors and fictional characters in his music rather than calling people by name, White told the newspaper. He wanted to leave the audience’s “search for hypocrisy” unattended.
Bob Dylan is a mentor to Jack White (but not an easy one either)
The fact that the former guitarist and singer of the White Stripes is committed to Bob Dylan is anything but new. In an interview with ROLLING STONE, White called the Nobel laureate an “incredible mentor” and “good friend.” At the same time, he revealed that Dylan was a very complicated personality. He also mentioned to Dan Rather in an interview that he once told Dylan that he was “envious” of the musicians of the ’60s because it was easier to write meaningful songs back then due to social changes.
For Jack White, Bob Dylan only stands as a fixed star for political songwriting, which many other musicians also claim for themselves. According to the singer, people interact with music differently than with language. “As soon as someone comes forward and clearly rejects something, everyone starts to see whether that is authentic,” said the 50-year-old. “As far as the president is concerned, I’ve said what needs to be said. But if I were to express it in artistic form, I probably wouldn’t say those things directly. I wouldn’t name names. I would make up a character.”
In this context, White also mentioned Taylor Swift, whose autobiographical texts represented the exact opposite of his view of art and which he considered “boring”. He has no interest in processing his most painful experiences in texts just so that “some idiot on the internet can stomp on them.”
A starting point for an open conversation with him “Guardians” was the introduction of Jack White’s book “Complete Lyrics and Selected Writing”a collection of lyrics to all the songs he wrote independently of The White Stripes (But there is also something about his beloved old band). These include poems, Instagram posts and thoughts from notebooks.
