The Ivory Coast has to do without regular goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo at the Africa Cup. The goalkeeper of the Ethiopian first division team Wolkite City remains temporarily suspended for doping despite all the efforts of the Ivorians.

“We were hoping for a different decision,” said French coach Patrice Beaumelle the day before the first group game against Equatorial Guinea.

Gbohouo tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine after playing a game in November. Beaumelle said he had previously sent Gbohouo to an ophthalmologist because the goalkeeper had problems with long balls. Gbohouo was then prescribed a drug.

“We all support him. He trained on his own, has not slept or eaten and has lost weight. Yesterday I learned that FIFA is maintaining their ban and we have 20 days to appeal. We did that.” said Beaumelle.
