“I have lived two lives and the first was very hard, also made up of discrimination and repression”, Ivana told Grazia and Giulia. “In childhood I put towels on my head to simulate long hair and I played with Barbies” Gieffina explained that as she grew up she made an important decision in her life, but without sharing it with anyone: “Then an edition of the Big Brother and there is a competitor who had had the same problems as me, my same story, my same life. For me he was kind of an example, a beautiful example.”
Ivana found the courage to write one letter to mother on her eighteenth birthday, in tears, hiding her while waiting for the woman to find her. After reading it, her mother came to her crying and hugged her. “I had lived the entire first part of my life without understanding who I was. Kids wait until they are 18 to get their driving license, to graduate, I waited until I was 18 to be free“, Gieffina then added, recalling that on that occasion her mother only said to her: “All these people are here for you, because they love you”.

After that letter, her mother never broached the topic again until the day Ivana decided to talk about it openly. “One day I told her: ‘This is the last time you’ll see me‘. My mother stood in front of the door and said to me: ‘Maybe it’s just a moment, what if you change your mind?’. At that point I told her: ‘I will never change my mind, because your son never existed‘”.
Since then everything has changed and her mother supported her in the transition process: “It wasn’t easy, but then it happened. My mother is the strongest woman in the world. I am who I am thanks to my mother“he then added.
Today the competitor of Big Brother he is happy: he has met the love of his life, who has become his Husband. “I hoped to find a man who loved me, to have a family, to be accepted. You are afraid of the role you will have in society”, she admitted, and then concluded: “I was a transsexual person and I ended my journey on May 25, 2009, at 19 years old. Today I am Ivana, from Catania, 35 years old, married to Toni, a metalworker: I don’t have any label.”
