Italian romance: similarities between Georgia Meloni and Javier Milei

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Melonipraised the Argentine president this week Javier Mileiwhom he described as “a fascinating personality” during an interview on the television program “Quarta Repubblica”. Nicola Porro, host of that shipment, described Milei as “a showman, as well as a very serious person.” And he made reference to the coincidences with Meloni, who comes from journalism and the media before succeeding in politics, as also happens with the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayusofigure of the Spanish right.

The president of the Council of Ministers of Italy also highlighted the “extraordinary passion” from Milei and recalled that she was one of the first leaders in Europe to call him to congratulate him after his victory in the elections. But not the only one. The Argentine has the support of what is known as Madrid Forum (as opposed to that of Puebla), which is made up of Meloni, and which also includes the Brazilian Jair Bolsonarothe Spanish Vox de Santiago Abascalthe Chilean José María Kast, among other leaders. A space that is also referenced with the former president of the United States, donald trumpwhich at this time is celebrating a victory that brings it closer to competing again for a return to the Oval Office.

Milei and Meloni, that they will see each other’s faces February 12 in Romeat the Chigi Palace, headquarters of the Italian Executive, they will do so one day after the Argentine participates in the canonization in the Vatican of Mom Antula, who will be the first Argentine saint, publicly celebrate their coincidences. “Argentina is a nation with which we are linked through deep historical and cultural ties and where the largest community of Italians lives abroad. Rome and Buenos Aires share common values that define our foreign policy action in the current international context,” read the statement distributed by the Italian government.

Like Milei, Meloni reached the top of public power at the hands of another former prime minister: the former president Silvio Berlusconi, owner of the Rete4 channel and the Mediaset network. And like the libertarian, depends on your economic success to leave the criticism behind and prove that she can govern: she is the first woman in Italian history to hold the position, a complete change of era for the European country. Another coincidence: both have an anti-immigration speech. Meloni has aimed to stop the arrival of refugees from Africa, while she has won allies in NATO in her support of Ukraine.

The Meloni administration, like Milei’s, puts focus on streamlining procedures, even in the courts, unblocking the judicial bureaucracy. And he also agrees with the Argentine in a reduction of the presence of the State: Meloni insisted that the Treasury could raise 20,000 million euros in three years through partial privatizations. But there has been no serious movement towards the disposal of the State’s vast real estate assets.
