The past few years have been extremely successful for Achille Polonara. Now a serious health setback is suffering from him. He fights against blood cancer.
Basketball national player Achille Polonara from Italy has myeloic leukemia. This was announced by his club Virtus Bologna on Monday. The 33-year-old is currently being treated in the Sant’orsola Malpighi hospital in Bologna. There he is supplied with “specific therapies”, the association said.
The diagnosis had been made in recent weeks after several specialist examinations. “The entire family of Virtus Bologna is involved in Achille and his relatives and wishes him a quick recovery. Forza Achi, we are all with you,” said the club in a message.
Polonara has been under contract with the Euroleague participant from Bologna since 2023. In its career, the Power Forward became champion in Lithuania (2023 with Zalgiris Kaunas), Turkey (2022 with Fenerbahce Istanbul) and Spain (2020 with Bankkonia Vitoria). Already in 2019 he won the Fiba Europe Cup with Dinamo Sassari.
