Injury shock: Ski ace misses home Olympics

Marta Bassino actually wanted to compete in the Olympic Games in her home country. But now she has seriously injured herself.
The anticipation of a home game at the 2026 Winter Olympics comes to an abrupt halt for Marta Bassino. The Italian ski racer seriously injured her left knee in a training fall in Val Senales – and will be out for months.
As the association announced, the 29-year-old suffered a fracture of the tibial plateau and a torn inner ligament. The operation took place on Wednesday evening in Milan. According to the initial forecast, Bassino will be out for at least four to six months – which means that a start at the games in February is out of the question.
The women’s competitions at the Olympic Games will take place in Cortina d’Ampezzo – exactly where Bassino became world champion in the parallel event in 2021. Two years later she also won World Cup gold in the Super-G in Méribel.
Bassino’s loss is part of a series of injuries in the Italian women’s team. Slalom specialist Marta Rossetti had previously torn her cruciate ligament during glacier training in Senales Valley. She will also be missing for several months.
It remains to be seen whether Federica Brignone will be fit in time for the Olympics. The giant slalom world champion and former overall World Cup winner injured her knee in the spring. Brignone recently said that it was “actually an impossible undertaking”, but she wanted to remain confident.
