According to the Israeli army, the incident took place at a crossing point on the northern shore of the Dead Sea. According to the media, the perpetrator escaped and fled in the direction of the Palestinian city of Jericho.
The victim would have American nationality in addition to Israeli. The US government condemned the death of the US citizen in Palestinian territory as murder. There was also criticism of the “gruesome murder” on Sunday of two Israeli brothers near Nablus, a little further north in the area.
Earlier, Israel announced that it has further increased its military presence in the West Bank, following the riots that broke out in the area on Sunday.
One Palestinian was killed. Hundreds of others were injured. That too was criticized by Washington: “We also condemn the large-scale indiscriminate violence by settlers against Palestinian civilians following the killings.”
