Israeli army bombs Lebanon and Gaza Strip in retaliation for rocket attack | Abroad

UpdateThe Israeli army carries out attacks in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon in the night from Thursday to Friday. It is in retaliation after 34 rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon. According to Israel, Palestinian groups are behind this.

The Israeli army is “currently striking in Lebanon,” read an Israeli army statement at 4:07 a.m. (local time). The targets of the bombings are installations belonging to the Palestinian movement Hamas, according to Israel. AFP journalists heard strong explosions in southern Lebanon.

Earlier in the evening and night, the Gaza Strip was also bombed. Several sources had heard several explosions there, both in northern and southern areas of the territory.

The Israeli retaliatory action allegedly targeted three Hamas training camps, a Palestinian security source reported. Another Islamic movement facility in the center of the Gaza Strip was also attacked.

Earlier at the opening of a security cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had left no doubt about retaliation: “We will hit our enemies and they will pay the price for any aggression,” he said.

Rocket attack from Lebanon

The Israeli strike comes after the country on Thursday accused Palestinian groups of firing 34 rockets into its territory from Lebanon. Two people were injured in that rocket attack. Israeli media speak of the largest rocket attack from the northern neighbor since 2006.

Most missiles were intercepted. At least five rockets landed on Israeli territory, the army reports, which emphasizes that these are preliminary figures. According to a spokesman for the army, the Palestinian movement Hamas is responsible. Iranian involvement is also being investigated.
