After 9 months a fairground child

Loeff agrees that the fair is traditionally a place to meet new people. “In the past, the fair was the wedding market, I always say. The day in the year you met, and with a drink on a little looser. That often yielded a fairground child nine months later. That is something else now, but you still often hear that couples met each other at the fair for the first time.”

In Spierdijk they celebrated a fair last weekend and that is not a matter of course. After closing the bowling center, villagers picked up the glove and they have been organizing the fair since.

‘Fair must stay’

Because the fair, which has to stay, thinks Lars Dol of the fair. And not only he. “We have 74 sponsors, that says enough. Everything is getting less: the hospitality industry, the school, the sports clubs. Then the fair is a very important thing for many people.”

Something was organized for every age group. “And on Sunday afternoon was the Dutch afternoon. Then all ages come together, and that ensures a lot of connection. You speak to your neighbor who otherwise doesn’t see much, or you will meet someone who lives on the other side of the village. That will not happen otherwise.”
