Is Hrgota going to Hannover 96 with Leitl? Veto by Greuther Fürth’s Azzouzi

Hanover has “no money storage”

“Throughout the season, Branimir has given the best performance. He was an outstanding captain in communication and made sure that the team was always intact and the dressing room lived,” enthuses Fürth and soon Hannover 96 coach Stefan Leitl about attacker Branimir Hrgota. Despite the current contract with “Kleeblatt” until 2024, the 29-year-old could follow his coach in the direction of Lower Saxony in the summer, as the “picture” newspaper initially reported. On Thursday evening, there was a slight all-clear from Fürth.

It’s no secret that in this transfer period in Hanover, given the third weakest offensive in the league, the feelers are being put out for a powerful centre-forward. Leitl will be up front next season Hendrik Weydandt, Cedric Teuchert and Lucas Hinterseer are now available – together they scored five goals this season. However, the search for an offensive power is difficult, as the club’s management attested: “We know how important a good striker is. But we don’t have that yet,” quoted the “NP” managing director Martin Kind and sports director Marcus Mann also knows that this is “the most difficult task”, “the offer is scarce and everyone is looking for a striker like that.”

Many candidates have recently been traded around the Maschsee – starting with Wolfsburg’s Bartosz Bialek, whose possible move the neighboring Bundesliga club put a stop to a few weeks ago, through Darmstadt’s Aaron Seydel (in the meantime extended) to the courted U19 national player Armindo Sieb from FC Bayern Munich . So far nothing has been concrete (all rumors about 96 additions at a glance). In the event of a change, Hrgota would be on a leash with the recommendation of 137 Bundesliga (21 goals, 13 assists) and 63 two-league games (26 goals, 12 assists) for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt and Fürth. In the current season he is the top scorer at Spielvereinigung with ten goals across all competitions, has played as captain in all 33 Bundesliga games and was only not in Leitl’s starting XI for the away game in Dortmund in December.

With Fabian Kunze, Phil Neumann, Enzo Leopold and Max Besuschkow, 96 had signed the first four newcomers free of charge in the past few days as part of the planned squad change. One thing is clear: an experienced professional like Hrgota with a current contract would not be easily affordable for the club: “We don’t have any money storage,” Mann expresses expectations with a view to a possible transfer in “Bild”. According to the newspaper, however, the striker’s working paper should contain an exit clause that is “significantly” below the current market value (2 million euros) of the three-time Swedish international. In addition, Fürth should not want to put any obstacles in the way of the striker wanting to change: “There is a clear agreement between Branimir and us,” said sporting director Rachid Azzouzi.

On Thursday evening the manager said (quoted via “Picture”) meanwhile that he spoke to Leitl about a possible Hrgota deal: “He told me that he would not approach our players. I don’t think that’s appropriate either.”

Fürth coach Leitl on striker Hrgota: “He met all expectations”

At 96, Hrgota’s personality has repeatedly been an issue in recent years, and in 2019 Leitl lured him from Hesse to Fürth on a free transfer. It is obvious that the coach would welcome a possible transfer of the offensive power to Hanover: “Branimir has become a central figure here, also for me. After signing him, I said it was an outstanding transfer for Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth. He fulfilled all expectations, not just in terms of sport.”
