Irish boxer John Cooney died in a hospital a week after a lost fight. He had been injured in the fight and fell into a coma.

Irish boxer John Cooney died a week after a serious head injury. The 28-year-old had suffered the injury in a fight in Belfast. Despite emergency operation, he now succumbed to his injuries, as his management announced in the evening.

Cooney competed in Ulster Hall against Nathan Howells last Saturday to defend his Celtic superfeder weight title. In combat, he always had to take heavy head hits. The fight was finally canceled in the ninth round. He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where he fell into a coma.

His management MHD promotion said: “After a week of the fight for his life, John Cooney unfortunately died.” The family and his fiancé thanked the hospital staff for care and all supporters.

Former companions and organizations expressed their grief about the loss. The former professional boxer Conrad Cummings spoke of a “deep pain” for Cooney’s family and friends. According to “Belfast Telegraph”, the Galway Amateur Boxing Association described death as “the worst possible message”. A call for donations for the family had collected around £ 47,000 by evening.
