Irene Schouten eliminated with pursuit team; battle for bronze remains

Irene Schouten failed to reach the final of the team pursuit at the Olympic Games together with Antoinette de Jong and Ireen Wüst. The trio lost the semi-final to Canada in a direct game and can therefore prepare for the bronze medal later today.

The trio took a lead after the first lap, but relinquished it in the remainder of the stage. Irene Schouten was the final driver and was unable to make up for the deficit.

Canada, with Blondin, Maltais and Weidemann in the track, was more than a second faster than the Netherlands at the finish. Canada will now compete for the gold against Japan. Russia is the opponent of the Netherlands for the bronze.

Gold medals

It means that Hoogkarspel’s Irene Schouten will not get her third gold medal today. Schouten already won gold on the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Schouten will also be in action on the mass start.
