After missing the European Championship qualification, Ireland parted ways with national coach Stephen Kenny. The FAI association announced this on Wednesday. A successor is still unknown. The 52-year-old took over the office in April 2020. In 40 international matches under Kenny’s leadership, the team scored an average of 1.1 points.
As fourth in Group B behind France, the Netherlands and Greece, Ireland clearly missed out on a ticket to next year’s tournament in Germany. This means that the Irish have to take on the role of spectators at a major tournament for the fourth time in a row.
“Stephen has also led an important transition period for our senior men’s national team, helping a large number of new and younger players make their debuts and this will serve as a solid foundation for whoever takes this group of players forward,” said chief executive Jonathan Hill.
