It is an important holiday for many Iranians and is often accompanied by visiting family and eating together. The Haft-Seen table takes center stage during Norooz. Seven objects are placed on this table that symbolize renewal, hope and solidarity. Where Norooz is normally celebrated at home with family, people now gather to count down until the new year begins. According to organizer Yasmin Katibai, this is important: “I want us to stand side by side, so that we don’t feel alone.”
Because it is certainly not just a party. During the celebration on Museum Square, attention is drawn to the current situation in Iran. Due to the war, Iranians in the Netherlands have difficulty making contact with family in Iran. Due to the internet blockages, many have not spoken to each other for days or weeks. This is difficult, especially on this holiday, where family is central: “Many people are sad because they have no contact. Everyone also comes here to comfort each other.”
Despite the sadness, there is also dancing and singing. Those present hope that they will be able to celebrate the new year with their family again next year.
