Yarrahi released a song on August 25 called ‘Rousarito’, which is Persian for ‘your headscarf’. Two days later, the Iranian Justice stated that “a legal case has been filed against him in connection with an illegal song that goes against the morals and customs of the Islamic society”.
The song’s music video features dancing women who are encouraged to take off their mandatory headscarves. The singer dedicated the song to the “courageous Iranian women” who took part in the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. That 22-year-old woman died almost a year ago after her arrest because she would not have worn her headscarf according to the regulations.
Mahdi Yarrahi regularly defends the protests on his Instagram page. Last year in October, he released “Soroode Zan” (“Women’s Song”), which became a hymn for the protesters, especially in the universities.
During his performances he regularly criticizes the authorities, mainly because of the discrimination against the population of Khuzestan, a province in the southwest of the country. At the moment he has not been arrested yet.
