iOS 17.0.1 and 17.0.2: This is in the iPhone updates

Apple is releasing two iOS updates right after the launch of the iPhone 15. TECHBOOK explains what this is all about.

Since September 18th, iOS 17 has been officially available as an update for compatible iPhone models. However, just a few days later, Apple has already released two more versions of the new operating system: iOS 17.0.1 and iOS 17.0.2.

iOS 17.0.1 and 17.0.2 close critical security holes

With iOS 17, numerous new functions such as standby, namedrop and live voicemail come to the iPhone. iOS 17.0.1 and 17.0.2, however contain security patches and bug fixes.

Specifically, the updates eliminate three weak points, which affect the iOS kernel, Apple WebKit and iOS apps. Apple is aware of reports that attackers may have actively exploited the vulnerabilities.

In the case of the kernel vulnerability, attackers were able to increase their privileges by manually accessing the iPhone. But hackers were also able to wreak havoc from a distance because Apple’s WebKit browser engine had a vulnerability. This is not only used in Safari, but also forms the basis for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other browsers for the iPhone. Websites created with malicious intent could lead to arbitrary code execution when opened. Apple has eliminated both problems with improved controls.

Security researchers have found another gap at the level of iOS apps. This means that an app created with malicious intent was able to bypass signature validation, which would otherwise have revealed it as fake. According to Apple, the problem was due to a faulty certificate and has been fixed with iOS 17.0.1.

iOS 17.0.2 includes all of the security patches from iOS 17.0.1, but is exclusive to the iPhone 15. Apple has yet to launch detected an errorwhich resulted in no data being transferred from another iPhone when setting up the new smartphone.

Should you install iOS 17.0.1 and 17.0.2 right away?

The two updates contain relevant security patches for vulnerabilities that may have been actively exploited by hackers. That alone is reason enough to install it straight away. It is not expected that the installations, which are several hundred megabytes in size, will cause problems.

iOS 17.0.2 is also particularly important for iPhone 15 buyers who are switching from another iPhone. To prevent your data from being transferred correctly to the new smartphone during setup, you should definitely install the update. The update is available exclusively for iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

iPadOS 17.0.1 is also available for download at the same time as iOS 17.0.1. The updates are for iPhone and newer) and iPad mini (5th generation and newer) available.
